Osteoarthritis

What is Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is a common joint condition where the protective cartilage wears down, causing pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced movement. It mostly affects the knees, hips, spine, and hands, especially with age, overuse, or past injuries. Though it can’t be reversed, symptoms can be managed with exercise, weight control, medications, or therapies like PRP or Regenerative Treatmentss to support joint health and function.

Osteoarthritis Symptoms and Signs:

Here are the early Signs & Symptoms of Osteoarthritis:

  • Joint Pain-Pain is the most common and early symptom. It often worsens with activity (e.g., walking, climbing stairs) and improves with rest. In advanced stages, pain may persist even at rest or during the night.
  • Stiffness- Most noticeable after periods of inactivity or first thing in the morning. Morning stiffness usually lasts less than 30 minutes. Stiffness can make it difficult to start moving the joint.
  • Swelling- The affected joint may appear puffy or enlarged due to inflammation or fluid buildup. Swelling can cause a tight or heavy feeling in the joint.
  • Reduced Range of Motion-Movement of the joint becomes limited over time. Tasks like bending, kneeling, or grasping objects may become difficult.
  • Grinding or Cracking Sound (Crepitus)- A grating or popping sensation may be felt or heard when moving the joint. This is caused by rough surfaces of bones rubbing together due to cartilage loss.
  • Tenderness-The joint may feel sore when pressure is applied, even lightly. This is due to inflammation of tissues around the joint.
  • Bone Spurs (Osteophytes)-Extra bone may form around the joint as the body tries to repair cartilage loss. These can cause visible lumps, joint stiffness, or even nerve irritation.
  • Joint Deformity (in advanced cases)- The joint may look misshapen due to cartilage breakdown and bone changes. This is more common in fingers, knees, or toes.

Common Fears & Concerns related to Osteoarthritis:

Here are some common fears and concerns faced by people diagnosed with Osteoarthritis:

  • Fear of Chronic Pain- Many worry that joint pain will become constant and unmanageable, affecting daily comfort and quality of life.
  • Loss of Mobility and Independence-Concerns about difficulty walking, climbing stairs, or performing simple tasks, leading to dependence on others.
  • Progression of the Disease-Fear that the condition will worsen over time, leading to severe joint damage or deformity.
  • Need for Surgery-Anxiety about the possibility of joint replacement surgery, its risks, and recovery time.
  • Impact on Career or Daily Activities-Worry that the condition may interfere with work, exercise, or hobbies they once enjoyed.
  • Side Effects of Medications-Concern over long-term use of painkillers, anti-inflammatories, or steroids and their potential impact on health.
  • Financial BurdenStress over the cost of ongoing treatments, physical therapy, or surgical procedures.
  • Emotional Impact-Feelings of frustration, depression, or helplessness due to chronic discomfort and lifestyle limitations
  • Fear of Weight Gain- Reduced activity levels may lead to weight gain, which can worsen symptoms and create additional health issues.
  • Social Isolation-Avoiding things or activities due to joint pain or embarrassment over limited mobility.
